Will Self on
the death
of literary
novel.
A highly recommend, wonderful
piece on
the death
of the
literary novel by Will Self, one
of the
most outstanding
writers and
frequent provocateur
on the
English media. (Published in The Guardian).
In addition to several journalist contributions
Self used
to write
on environment
for Building
Design Magazine
(collection of articles
edited later
as the book
Sore Sites
2006), and on the psychology of place for the
Independent Magazine (until 2008). As a celebrated opinion
maker for
urban environment
he always presents an idiosyncratic
view of
his love-hate London. This relationship with the
place could
be validated in an essay about
London from
1989 to 2009 he wrote for the London +10 exhibition
at the
Architectural Association Gallery, and also in some articles
such as "In defence of the Shard" The Times may
25 , 2011.
The novel is dead (this time it's for real).
Literary fiction used to be central to the culture. No more: in the digital age, not only is the physical book in decline, but the very idea of 'difficult' reading is being challenged. The future of the serious novel, argues Will Self, is as a specialised interest
